XXXXRARE huge maquette byCoudray,ca.1899:Gallia (starting price: USD $199.99 NO RESERVE) This maquette shows an exceptional engraving of Helmeted and 3/4 faced bust of GalliaObv/ Gallia , her bust to the left with the legend around : SI VIS PACEM PARA BELLUM (if you look for Peace, get ready for war..) Rev/ plain (filled of lead) Information and bibliography: This EXCEPTIONAL large galvanoplasty plaque (diameter is : 8 inches 2/5 ) was engraved by Lucien Coudray (1864-1932). He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1882 w he studied under Dumont, Thomas, Allouard and Ponscarme. From 1882 Coudray exhibited at the Salons in Paris. In 1893 he received the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, in 1898 a first prize award at the Salon and in 1900 a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle. A bit more about this maquette : it shows a very, very uncommon figure of Gallia as she is standing 3/4 face and having quite interrogative eyes. Lucien Coudray was a medallist especially. During the "Art Nouveau" (also called la "Belle Epoque"), his Art Work was appreciated a lot (at the same level than Lalique, Fouquet and some more). Later, this engraving was associated as an obverse to an engraving by Charles Marey for shooting societies. Such galvano pieces are EXTREMELY RARE ITEMS . They were very often used in kinds of contests which were organised and submitted to a jury in order to make a choice. What I could say, it was maybe a kind of proof as the official known medal I just told about in my previous lines. Comment : I guess it is not necessary to have another too long comment about this SO RARE galvano plaque ! and which is in a VERY beautiful grade with a nice light chocolate patina (t is just a light dark dpot on the helmet).
