This Yakima Native American Basket from Washington State was both a basket for gathering roots, and also a girls hat, as shown in the cover picture of the book Columbia River Basketry - Gift of the Ancesters, Gift of the Earth" by Mary Dodd Schlick. This basket has a glowing patina and has been well carred for. The basket is 5 1/2 inches tall, and 5 1/2 inches wide at the opening. I have owned this basket since 2000. It is much older, I would guess 1940s from the patina, but I have no history on the basket to date it accurately. This is a lovely example of Yakima Basketry. The small hole in the side of the basket near the rim is not damage, it is w the basket was attached to a belt rope for gathering roots, and for a striging to keep the hat on the head.Check out my other auctions on Ebay. I am putting up a wide variety of Native American art and artifacts, Pottery, Baskets, Rugs, Wood Carvings, and books about each subject. I will be putting up new items from now through the Hoildays so check back often. Thank You - David
