Dutch Colonial 1788 Ceylon VOC Dump Stuiver 1 Stuiver Copper Cob, VOC Dump Stuivers; Colombo mint: OBVERSE: Mintmark C above VOC monogram REVERSE : Value 1 STUIVER 1788 Ceylon. Dutch Occupation. AE 1 Stuiver 1788. Ref: KM#26 Reference: VOC Dump coinage of Ceylon: Owing to the constantly increasing shortage of small change in the province, the council of Colombo decided to have copper Stuivers struck in Ceylon. These are the famous 'VOC dump Stuivers' series of Ceylon and they were struck in the local mints in Colombo, Galle, Trincomalee and Jaffna. The dump coins were struck from 1783 (Colombo and Galle) and continued till 1794, although coins from that date and a few other dates, are of extreme rarity. Look for coins well struck with the monogram and the date clear; In the Trincomalee series, the coins are almost always of an irregular, mostly triangular shape. Look out for forgeries. We will now look at these in greater detail: VOC Dump Stuivers; Colombo mint: The values from this mint are the 1 Stuiver (common to all mints) and the quarter (exclusively struck at Colombo). Note there was no 2 Stuiver struck at Colombo. The 1 Stuiver coins are from 1783 to 1795. Scholten refers to 1783-5, 1788, 1792-5 as R; From our experience, we have found all dates in good condition to be scarce with the dates 1793-4 rare and 1795
