I inherited this barometer from my father. I don’t know much about it. I believe it is still in working condition because the dials do move when the weather changes. On the face it says “Metal Barometer Made for Yeates & Son, Dublin.” It is 9” in diameter and is about 2” deep. By doing some research, I found this on the Institute for Learning Technologies website: The Yeates family business "Instrument Makers and Opticians" first appeared in directories in 1790. The shop moved to 2 Grafton St, Dublin in 1827. The business became Yeates and Son "Instrument Makers and Opticians" in 1865 when Stephen Mitchell Yeats took over the business which his father George Mitchell Yeates had raised him in. The business advertised as "Instrument makers to the University". They claimed to specialize in scientific and educational instruments. The shop at 2 Grafton St was directly across the street from Trinity College in Dublin. It was the business from Trinity, which sustained the firm for so many years. In fact some of the scientific instruments made by Yeates and Son still exist today in Trinity College. From this, I assume that this barometer was made in the 1800s, but I can’t be sure. Condition-wise, it has some normal wear. However, the only distracting problem I can see is that the gold foil on the inside has begun to peel. I have indicated the place with a red arrow. I would think this could be easily repaired. On the back, it is numbered 213. There may also be a signature to the right of the number, but again, I cannot be sure. The wood frame is a dark, rich brown, perhaps mahogany. Because I believe I have described barometer accurately and have added some detailed images, I would prefer no returns on this piece. Should you require any further information prior to bidding, do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you!
