Artist: C.H. Billings ; Engraver: J. Archer Size of image: 8 by 5.50 inches ; Overall Size 8.25 by 11 in. This is a high quality engraving titled "Exchange, New York." It is in excellent condition and shows a fine rendering of this old neoclassical building. This engraved view was published in 1846 in a collection of American topographical views. Interesting detailed view of this fine old building, the horse and carriage, two men on horseback, a man pulling a hand cart, and many pedestrians in period dress. Neoclassical architecture thrived in the United States throughout the 19th century, and examples of it exist in nearly every major city. The analogy with imperial Rome and later with the grandeur and political ideals of Periclean Athens strengthened the case for the adoption of Roman and Greek architectural models in the United States.
