A pair of 3ct Washington stamps, Scott# 65, tied by an April 14 New-York postmark and target fancy cancel on this 1862 Civil War era cover addressed to Miss Mary Campbell care of S.(amuel) Campbell Esq. in New York Mills, New York. There is a penciled "Apr 8/62" date on back of the cover. Also included is the long ten page letter datelined: New York Apr 8. 62 Tuesday eve. This letter is written by George H. Peckham to his future wife, Mary Campbell. More than two pages of this long letter have cross-writing making those pages difficult to read. Luckily pages 2 and 3 do not have any cross-writing when George writes some comments and thoughts about the then current American Civil War and, I think, the Battle of Shiloh.George writes the following: "We had good news yesterday from 'No 10' but what glorious news this morning, if it is only true. By present advices the battle is the greatest ever fought in this country and I hope its results may be equally important - but the service from which we get the news and the way I read it - somehow makes me suspicious of another Bull Run affair - it is plain we were badly whipped the first day. I only hope that our success the next may prove true.
