HISTORY OF THE 1961 CHAMPION NEW YORK YANKEES The year 1961 was arguably the most exciting season in the history of New York Yankee's Baseball, or for all of Major League Baseball for that matter. One team during the year of 1961 that consisted of all 'Great Players'. As memory well serves, veteran players Mantle andMaris dominated the daily headlines across the entire world for the entire New York Yankee season. Center Fielder Mickey Mantle and Right Fielder Roger Maris went hit-for-hit through the summer games in a fantastic race to break Babe Ruth's single season home-run record of 60 runs. Yankee fans and non-fans alike across the entire globe followed each game with tension that amounted to a near frenzy. When Roger Maris hit his 61st home run in his final at bat, those of us who w lucky enough to watch this momentous event felt an almost indescribable mixture of ecstatic joy along with a bit of sadness mixed in. You can now share some of those same feelings by 'Holding This Original Game Baseball', which is covered with all 22 genuine signatures of all the greats from that 1961 New York Yankee's, Hall of Fame, World Championship Team. With the recent passing of George Steinbrenner, who purchased the New York Yankees in 1973, and who had been one of professional sports most controversial and quotable figures, it can only add to the mystique of such a piece of New York Yankee memorabilia as this guinine article. Twice suspended by baseball for legal and ethical violations, Steinbrenner nevertheless earned the respect of his fellow owners for his record of success on the field. The Yankees won multiple championships under Steinbrenner's aggressive style of leadership. George no doubt was one of the New York Yankee's greatest all time managers. To add insult to injury, just recently the Yankees lost one of their most famous on-air voices, Bob Sheppard. Locally known as 'The Voice of Yankee Stadium'. Sheppard was the team's public address announcer from 1951 until 2007. Sometimes when all was bleak at Yankee Stadium, when bushels of tickets could easily be had, he reminded fans that results be damned, these were still the New York Yankees.
