Yoruba Currency Bracelet - Nigeria Item Number: 2030 Description Yoruba Currency Bracelet Tribe: YorubaCountry: NigeriaMaterial: MetalSize: 6" (15.24 cm) DiameterCondition: Heavy oxidation but good.Provenance: James E. Adkins Estate Collection (Florida, USA)The use of imported copper and brass bracelets or 'manillas' as currency goes back at least to 1500, when the Portuguese based at the mouth of the Rio Real exchanged them for various commodities, from yams to cattle and slaves. These Yoruba bracelets were used as currency by the natives, but also melted down by them and recast into other forms, and used as currency. This situation continued until the beginning of the 20th century when the British, by then governing Nigeria, wanted to establish their own currency and forbade the use of any other. Much of the native currency was then buried and dug up again, only much later. There is some disagreements as to whether this type of object was wrought (that is, twisted after being heated) or cast by the lost wax process.Customer Service: 561-745-1905FREE!
