Kuniyoshi- Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) was born and raised in Edo (modern day Tokyo). He is one of the last recognized masters of ukiyo-e and followed in the tradition of some of the great ukiyo-e masters; Utamaro, Hokusai, Hiroshige, Harunobu, etc. Kuniyoshi was born into a middle class family, his father was silk dyer. An appreciation for the arts was part of his upbringing. His father was a friend of Tokyokuni I and Kuniyoshi was introduced to the incredible art of woodblock prints by the master Toyokuni I. While Kuniyoshi did a range of subjects from bijin to landscapes and actors prints, his favorite themes were those of the tales of legends. Kuniyoshi designed more than 20 triptychs from the Tale of the Forty-seven Ronin and several series of single Ronin prints. By far the most famous series was the present- Seichu gishi den. Collectors treasure these beautiful old images from the Tale of the Forty-seven Ronin and actively search them out in the market.

The Tale of the Forty-Seven Ronin- The fantastic tale and adventure of the Forty-Seven Ronin immediately captured the imagination of the Japanese public. Not two weeks after the culmination of the event, stories and plays were already being written about the bravery and loyalty of the Forty-Seven Ronin. Almost a hundred years later, prints artists of the 19th century seized on the enduring fascination with the Tale of the Forty-Seven Ronin and produced lavish print sets of the story and the forty-seven brave men from the tale. Much like many of the artists of the 19th century, Yoshifuji's series depicted various important events that represented the important markers of the tale. Comments- This fantastic print print is the first image from Kuniyoshi's Ronin series. The image is depicting Yuranosuke sitting on a camp stool and beating a military drum. The drum is used to call the samurai into battle formation. On the side of the drum is a inscription from a poem "life is lighter than duty." This is fantastic Ronin image and a great choice for a collector.

Condition- Excellent color and detail. This print is not backed. Some fraying and holes at right and left edges repaired from reverse with thin strips of paper. Two small holes repaired at bottom edge. A couple light spots in subject, a few light creases, not serious. In nice condition overall.
