ITEM: This is a brass New Zealand Government Railways Locomotive Smoke Box Front Number Plate from J Class engine No. 1220 a 4-8-2 built in 1939 by North British Locomotive Works, Glasgow, Scotland. SPECIFICS: The plate was from shop production No. 24543, it is round 7/16" thick or 1 1.112mm x 14" in dia. or 355.60mm , with large center backside hex threaded bolt like mounting, to place on face of the smoke box, overall thickness is - 1 1/2" or 38.100mm . This item was polished and painted "Bulletin Red" by a collector, and sealed with polyurethane clear sealer. The weight is the plate is about (14) lbs. CONDITION: The plate is in excellent condition, photos show normal edge nicks for it's age and railroad use. Exception: A prior collector drilled to small holes in between (valley area) just inside outside rim at about 10 & 2 o'clock, (see photos) to use two hex short bolts to fill holes that were used to mount a (back side piece of short angle iron) so the plate could then be placed on a hobby room wall. I removed angle iron stock (see back face photo after removal), then I repainted area and bolts ends on face in (valley) and hex part of bolts with "Bulletin Red" paint from fresh can of passed collector's stock, this is why red paint used appears slightly darker then other red areas.
