his exceptional Triple Irish Chain quilt is the complete package. Completely handmade, it features particularly controlled and skillful work in the piecing, appliqu and most notably the excellent quilting at 9-12 tiny stitches to the inch. The quilted motifs are a charming blend of sinuous wreaths and whirligigs juxtaposed against crisp slashing diagonals. The crowning touch though is that inspired border design, a sort of free flowing zigzag that boldly frames the quilt. The big wedges of green calico interrupted by slender strips of white manage to simultaneous give the classic design a satisfyingly heavy frame and make it feel jaunty, like a little white ribbon is wound merrily through the border. It's the kind inventive twist that nudges an workmanlike classic over the line towards standout. The quilt does have many small flaws, the main one being irregular patterns of sun-fading, but nothing is really that objectionable and in terms of drawing your attention, the flaws here don't stand a chance against the bold visuals and the masterful quilting. SizeThe quilt is a little off from square and measures about 76" x 78" . The square patches measure right around 2 inches across. The borders are about 4 inches wide and the low slung wedges of green about 9 inches wide at their bases. Quilting The hand-quilting is exquisite, with tiny stitches numbering 9-12 to the inch, counting on the top side of the quilt only. The 49-patch blocks are crisply quilted in a diagonal square grid laid out to crisscross each patch corner to corner. The open blocks feature elegant double-line center-vein and double-row feathered wreaths with pretty little whirligigs at their centers. There are some faint pencil lines visible on the wreaths. The borders are quilted with shallow curves arcing across the green wedges and straight lines spaced 3/4 apart filling spanning the white strips. Construction The quilt appears to be entirely hand-pieced. The corner patches on the open blocks are appliqud with such tiny stitches they're nearly invisible. (Description continues below.) (Continued from above) Binding, Batting & Backing The quilt's condition is quite excellent: strong, sturdy, crisp and clean. It does however show sections of probably excessive sun exposure that have brightened the green fabrics and occasionally faded the red ones, weakening their little printed motifs. This is mostly along the two middle fold lines running across the quilt both ways, and particularly pronounced at their edges. There are some bright spots of this same sun-bleaching to the green in the corners, a handful of tiny, faint stains, some minor unevenness to the white and a few little popped holes on it. In the pictures, I've tried to show you every last minor flaw up close. But the quilt is a joy to behold and I'm confident the new owner will find the small flaws very little if any distraction from its graphic good looks.
