From Harare, Zimbabwe *, this one-of-kind wood carved Africanized Nativity Set of Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus, three Wise men, a sheep and donkey (ass) by Joseph Marufu, a Shona sculptor, that usually sells for more than $100 in the USA. Joseph (pictured) born in Beatrice, Zimbabwe in 1974 started carving in 1997 and works in stone and wood producing animals, nativities, family circles, and abstracts. Born with a genetic disorder he produces little melanin pigment and is referrred to as an 'albino' in Zimbabwe. The disorder means that he works mainly indoors in poorly lit conditions was most Shona sculptors carve in natural daylight, a tremendous advantage to make use of natural wood and stone coloring, texture, and shadings. In spite of his disability, Joseph produces magnificent Africanized versions of the birth of Christ. Exceptionally well carved, the beautiful light-colored wood grain pieces will be a great addition to Christmas or a Christian ornament collection. A superb example of African talent the set was not polished (we have sets that are) so the purchaser may polish or paint if they do not want au natural. Although known for their stone sculpture, the Shona Tribe of Zimbabwe has a rich artistic heritage that includes woodcarvings and sculptures. Long-term care includes bi-annual (more frequent in dry environments) polishing with wood oil or polish. Long-term fine drying cracks especially in forced air environments are natural. Should one inadvertently scratch or chip the figures they are easily repairable and polish back up with a wonderful luster determined by the natural wood grain. The figures were carved from exotic deciduous wood, many we stock are from renewable wood sources, so please read our policy on indigenous wood use and poor communities .
