is a brand new, mint-in-box Zippo pocket knife with the name UNIVAC and the Sperry Univac tri-star logo in blue on a brushed stainless steel surface. I've had it for about 35 or so years. The knife is 2 inches long and an inch across at its widest point. It has a 1 5/8 inch blade and a nail file the same length. As with all Zippo products, it has a lifetime guarantee. The guarantee card is included in the box.

For those of you who aren't as "well seasoned" as I am, UNIVAC was the first commercially available computer. Its name...UNIVAC...is an acronym of sorts which stands for UNIV ersal A utomatic C omputer.

The UNIVAC I was designed by J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly in 1947. Their company, Eckert and Mauchly, was ultimately acquired by the Sperry Rand Corporation.

Sperry Univac was, for many years, the primary competitor of IBM in the main frame computer business which is rather ironic given that UNIVAC was the technically superior company and had many industry "firsts" to its credit. IBM was highly sales oriented but it was UNIVAC that led the technology prior to the advent of the Apple PC.

In 1986, Sperry Rand merged with the venerable Burroughs Corporation oof Detroit to form what is now Unisys.
