It is well known beyond the country's borders. The most renowned Zsolnay-pieces were born around the turn of the 19 th to the 20 th centuries. They got their elaborated finish with the aid of the Zsolnay factory's unique technology, eosin glaze with metallic lustre. The object offered dates from the Golden Age of the factory. Schiffer Books, ISBN: 0-7643-0534-4 The history of the factory The history of the factory reaches back to the foundation in 1852. It was then that Miklós Zsolnay founded the Zsolnay Hard Pottery Manufactory, the 'ancestor' of the factory, which he put on the name of his son Ignác in 1854. Vilmos Zsolnay took over leadership from his brother Ignác in 1865. It was then that the development of the workshop into a world-famous factory began. Vilmos Zsolnay, by experimenting with different types of clay and glaze, developed the one-time small workshop into the first workshop producing artistic ceramics in the country. The factory received its first recognition at the 1873 Vienna World Exhibition; Vilmos Zsolnay was awarded the Franz Josef award by the Emperor, and he also won the bronze medal and a certificate of merit. A large number of foreign orders for Zsolnay porcelain arrived from England , France , Russia and America . The Vienna World Exhibition represented the effects of all the prevailing trends of the age: the renewal of historical and oriental styles (eclecticism), scenes in the gothic style, renaissance style, figural decorations, Persian and Turkish motifs, Chinese and Japanese style floral patterns. In the world exhibitions at the end of the century the products of the factory had enormous successes both abroad and domestically owing to their fine material, their design, their lustre glazes and their hand painting. From 1874 the Hungarian and Persian style decorations designed by Teréz Zsolnay and Júlia Zsolnay were the most characteristic Zsolnay patterns until the end of the 1880s and gained world recognition for Hungarian ceramics. As a result of the management skills of Vilmos Zsolnay, the perfect technology and beauty of the ivory coloured glaze and the lustrous decoration the factory caught up with the prime ceramics industry of the age. The success in the 1878 Paris World Exhibition was enormous: the Zsolnay objects won the gold medal, the Grand Prix of the exhibition, and Vilmos Zsolnay received the French Legion of Honour. The factory got its first regular foreign business contract, a ten-year contract with a Vienna merchant. At the 1885 Budapest National General Exhibition Zsolnay paraded all the results of their life work thus far, from presenting the different glaze techniq...
