Up for auction is an exceptional little Zulu doll. The doll was acquired from the collection of Peter Adler. Mr. Adler collected much of his beadwork in the UK in the 1980's and 1990's and was renowned for his exceptional southern African bead work. His pieces are found in all the important books on traditional art for southern Africa. This doll on offer is quite exceptional - it stands 4 inches tall. The condition, for its age, is good. Some of the "hair" on the left side of the head, made from beads and seeds sewn on cotton, have been lost over time although this does not detract from the piece. A wonderful feature is that the core of the doll is covered in an early printed cotton. The cotton on the head, for instance, shows a young boy playing a flute. It is likely that the Zulu lady who made this doll found a piece of discarded clothing from a European child and used it to make this wonderful little doll. Please email with any questions or if you need further images. This is a great addition to any doll collection, bead work collection or Zulu collection.
