This UNIQUE BEAR fetish was carved by Native American ROSELLA LUNASEE and her husband LOUBERT SOSEEAH from PETOSKEY STONE . 350 million years ago coral from northern Michigan was once covered by the warm seas near the equator. With the continuous movement of the continents these corals are now found in the Northern US. The colonies of coral are filled with calcite and silica which have harden them into stone. The coral in this piece of Petoskey is readily seen throughout the artists wonderful rendering. Many carvers make their fetishes from this interesting material. The Loubert and Rosella are from the Zuni Reservation in New Mexico known for the many outstanding and very collectible Native American fetish carvers . They have inlaid the eyes with turquoise and etched their initials on the bottom of the fetish. The bear is the protective animal of the West in Zuni Mythology . The fetish measures 2 5/8 " long , 9/16" wide and 1 1/2" tall.
