New Comics Roundup

Below you will find all the info you could possibly need on the hot, new comics shipping this Wednesday, Jan. 5. For a full list of comics shipping this week, click here. To find a comic shop near you, click here.

Variant Watch

Here’s a list of all the variants shipping from Diamond this week and some info on the hot ones. The variant Ratios (ie; 1:10) represent how many of the regular issues the retailer has to order to receive one of the variants. If a ratio is not included it’s because I couldn’t get the information or because the variant is a new printing.

Lady Death #1 1:3 Michael Dipascale Art Deco Variant Cover

She’s back and, of course, with at least three different covers. This one is a 1:3, so watch for a $5-$6 price tag here, which is way too much to pay for a 16-page story. More on this one below.

Dark Horse:

Batman Beyond #1 1:10 Darwyn Cooke Variant Cover

Batman Beyond #1 1:10 Darwyn Cooke Variant Cover

I love Darwyn Cooke, and so do most nerds, which means this cover will probably sell quick. I’m guessing after the initial sellout of the previous Bats Beyond mini, retailers will probably up their orders on this issue, making the variant fairly easy to find for this week anyway. Watch for a $6-$8 price tag.

Speculator Picks of the Week

These are comics that could sell out very quickly due to conservative ordering, popular demand, shipping errors or the longest College Football Bowl season ever (I plan on watching maybe two). Pick them up while you can or pay too much for them later . . .

Batman Beyond #1

Batman Beyond #1

Solicitation: Yep, you read that right—the future of the DC Universe continues, as Batman Beyond becomes an ongoing series! Terry McGinnis and Bruce Wayne are stronger than ever after the battle with “Hush” brought their alliance close to the breaking point. But now a super-powered criminal has gotten in way over his head—and the whole Justice League has come to Neo-Gotham to hunt him down! To top it all off, the crook’s taken hostages . . . including Terryis mom! It’s the start of a story that will change Terry’s life—and the BEYOND universe—forever . . . so don’t miss out!

32 pgs
$2.99 US

Why it’ll go fast: This isn’t the first comic to be released digitally the same day it hits comic shops, but that won’t stop some retailers from mounting their high horse and reducing their order on the first issue of Batman Beyond, which will be a mistake. When the comic sells out, just like the first issue of previous mini-series, the same retailers will be complaining about being allocated a lesser amount of issues on their re-order. Digital comics are fine-and-dandy, but they haven’t replaced the print format yet, and until prices on the iPad bottom out, I think comics are relatively safe. Regardless, Batman Beyond is always hot and this series will be too. For at least the first five or six issues.

Lady Death #1

Lady Death #1

Boundless Comics

Solicitation: Lady Death is back in an all-new, on-going monthly series! The most popular femme fatale in comics returns with a vicious new tale that delivers for both new and old readers! Lady Death’s quest to recover the fragments of her mysterious past and otherworldly powers begins! Living as a simple thief among a family of renegades and robbers, Illadra now knows that her existence is a mere facade, masking a heritage of horror and incredible abilities that were born in the dimension called “The Nether Realm.” Tortured by fragments of nightmares and the glimpses of a past life long-forgotten, Illadra knows that her soul will not rest until she has recovered that which was stolen from her by the entity known as “Death Queen.” But her journey may end before it has begun, as a monstrous, werewolf assassin is dispatched through the dimensional breach to hunt Illadra and destroy her before she can recover her lost powers. Co-written by Mike (Gravel, Wolfskin) Wolfer and original creator Brian Pulido, this series promises to be the most powerful Lady Death tale ever! Amazing new talent Marcelo Mueller provides the luscious art and Digikore brings the dramatic colors wrapped in a stunning new cover by Garrie (Supergod) Gastonny! Also available with a Wraparound cover by Juan Jose Ryp and a special Art Deco Retailer Order Incentive by painter Michael Dipascale!

16 pages

Why it’ll go fast: Shocking as it may be, nerds still care about Lady Death. She made her first appearance in the pages of Brian Pulido’s Evil Ernie; Youth Gone Wild #1 (Eternity, 1991) and would go on to become a Chaos Comics mainstay and star of at least 15 different lingerie and swimsuit issues. For as long as I can remember filing comics at the shop where I worked, I remember sorting piles of Lady Death Variant covers because they never stopped selling. Even with a $4-price tag and only 16 pages, her latest series will too. Maybe it’s her ridiculous, gothy-swimsuits or her washboard abs and otherworldly bust-size, but Lady Death just won’t seem to . . . die. Welcome back Brian Pulido, and here’s to hoping your legion of Chaos comics fans from back-in-the-day are still sworn to the black.

Who is Jake Ellis #1

Who is Jake Ellis #1

Art & cover TONCI ZONJIC

Solicitation: Jon Moore is the most sought-after spy-for-hire in Europe’s criminal world. This is because of Jake Ellis, a psychic man who is invisible to everyone except Moore. When a deal goes bad, the only one who can protect Moore from Europe’s most dangerous criminals is Jake Ellis. No one but Moore can see Jake Ellis. But Jake Ellis can see everything.

32 pages

Why it’ll go fast: I’ve been harping on this for a while now, I know, but here we are, once again, talking about an Image comics first issue that sold out before it hit the stands. Who is Jake Ellis has huge buzz, a great premise, and is already sold out at Diamond, so expect to pay too much for this one if you can’t find it at your shop. Why this keeps happening seems to be a mystery. Retailers were offered an additional 5 percent off on this title when they matched 85 percent of their order on Chew #15, but I can’t believe that’s what pushed this title to a pre-sale sell-out. For now it’s a mystery but I’d love to hear your theories.
