The Comic Speculator – New Comics Roundup 10/20/2010

The Comic Speculator is a blog written by WorthPoint Comic Book “Worthologist” Matt Baum that takes a look at each week’s hot new comics and back issues and the comic market place in general. Prices discussed here are taken from the Overstreet Guide to Comics (OVST), Comicspriceguide.com (CPG) and current online auction sales. Sales numbers and rankings are courtesy of ICV2.com. The codes under the prices of new titles discussed are Diamond Comics order codes that can be used to help your local comic retailer in ordering the issues discussed.

New Comics Roundup:

Variant Watch:

Here’s a look at the variant comics hitting the shelves this week. The ratios discussed (i.e. 1:10) represent the ratio of regular covers retailers must order to receive one of the variant covers.

Avatar:

Night of the Living Dead Carceres variant
Night of the Living Dead Martin variant
Night of the Living Dead Diffield variant

Watch for three different variant covers of this weeks Night of the Living Dead adaptation from Avatar. The first is a wraparound cover by Raolo Caceres and the second, a “Gore” cover by Matt Martin. The third is a 1:3 black-and-white variant of the regular cover by Paul Diffield. All three could be hard to find as some retailers are paying close attention to the banning of a different Avatar comic, Neonomicon #2, by Secret Headquarters, a comic shop in Florida. For more on Night of the Living Dead and the banning of Neonomicon, see the Speculator Picks of the Week below. The three main covers were made available to retailers by order and shouldn’t be more than $3.99. Watch for a $5-$6 price tag on the black-and-white variant.

DC:

Justice League of America #50

Justice League of America #50 ships this week with another DC 75th Anniversary cover, this time by Jim Lee, and wow, does it look cool. Unlike some of the other Anniversary covers, this one is a 1:75 variant giving a much higher price tag. Watch for a $60-$70 price tag here.

IDW:

True Blood #4

True Blood #4 ships this week with another 1:10 photo variant, but that’s not the big story. There is apparently an Australian variant of issue #4 with a print run of only 1,000 copies from Ikon Entertainment. True Blood nerds are losing their minds over this variant but no one seems to know when or how it’s going to reach U.S. soil. I’m guessing eBay and I’m guessing the first person to list a CGC graded copy in 9.6 or better condition is going to make a nice chunk of change. More on this variant as the story develops.

Marvel:

Carnage #1 Crain variant
Carnage #1 Adams variant
Carnage #1 Zircher variant

Carnage #1 hits the stands this week with three different variants all worth checking out. Look for a 1:10 variant by Clayton Crain, a 1:15 variant by Patrick Zircher and a 1:25 variant by Arthur Adams. The Crain variant will probably be the easiest to find; watch for a $5-$7 price tag. The Zircher could be a little more difficult to find but should still be available for around $10-$12. The Adams variant, at 1:25, will be much harder to come by. Carnage hasn’t been an A-list villain since the late ’90s and may not have the sales power he used too. Watch for an $18-$20 price tag on the Adams variant which, strangely, doesn’t even feature the main character.

Daredevil #511 vampire variant
Deadpool #28 vampire variant
Hulk #26 vampire variant
X-23 #2 vampire variant

Look for more vampire variants from Marvel this week, also. Daredevil #511 by Jock, Deadpool #28 by Mike Mayhew, Hulk #26 by Salva Espin and X-23 #2 by Mike Mayhew all ship with 1:15 Vampire variants. Watch for $8-$10 price tags on most of these with the X-23 variant being the hardest to find due to lower orders.

Speculator Picks of the Week

These are comics that could sell out very quickly due to conservative ordering, popular demand, shipping errors, the Nebraska Cornhuskers dropping eight passes on national TV or any other set of unforeseen events. Pick them up while you can or pay too much for them later . . .

Fame: Justin Bieber #1: Bluewater

Fame: Justin Bieber #1

Solicitation: Justin Bieber started his life in simple public housing, and he must balance his growing fame with his humble beginnings as he comes of age with millions of pre-teen girls screaming his name and tweeting his every move. Fame: Justin Bieber traces the career of Bieber, from YouTube sensation to Twitter mainstay, from his musical childhood in Ontario to his first headlining tour.

Why it’ll go fast: Bluewater is currently sorting through piles of legal documents sent over by Bieber’s “people” to stop the sale of this comic on the basis of copyright infringement. The future of Bieber at Bluewater is still up in the air for now, but his comic is on the stands as of Wednesday and you can bet little girls (and some creepy older ones) everywhere will come looking for this one. If you’ve got the guts to bring this one up to the counter at your comic shop, I’d recommend saying it’s for your daughter and then selling it on eBay within the next month. Comics like these tend to get a lot of press initially and then disappear. Sell this one while it’s hot or be stuck with Bieber in your collection forever.

Night of the Living Dead #1: Avatar

Night of the Living Dead #1

Solicitation: The most unprecedented and horrifying night in American history continues as the next chapter of Night of the Living Dead is revealed at last! Set on that fateful evening in 1968, shocking reports from rural areas continues to flood the airwaves with accounts of the recently deceased rising up to kill the living. Now, government officials begin counter-measures to calm an increasingly panic-stricken public. Questioning whether or not the unbelievable stories are truth or simply an elaborate hoax perpetrated by militants opposed to the Vietnam War, the attention of the nation’s Capitol is focused on a threat more believable, as thousands of protesters converge on Capitol Hill to voice their opposition to the war. But with National Guard forces spread impossibly-thin to deal with civil unrest, Washington D.C. is completely unprepared for an event that will forever change the course of the country, and perhaps the world, as an unstoppable army of the undead begins to flood the city, bringing their blood-thirsty reign of terror to the very steps of the White House! Written by the smash duo of Mike Wolfer and John Russo, the original film co-writer, this blood-drenched five-issue series features new artist Tomas Aira.

Why it’ll go fast: As I stated earlier, a comic shop in Florida called the Secret Headquarters recently banned the sale of Avatar’s Neonomicon #2 for issues with what they call pornographic content and suddenly everyone is watching to see what happens next. Here’s the SHQ blog post on the subject. Of course, a comic about flesh-eating zombies is going to be closely inspected as well, and as soon as someone decides it should also be banned, watch for copies to go flying off the shelves. There’s no PR like bad PR, and Avatar has got to be loving the press on this story so far and laughing all the way to the bank.

Soldier Zero #1: Boom!

Soldier Zero #1

Solicitation: Stan’s back! The publishing event of the year! Stan Lee, the most colossal force in the history of comics, teams up with BOOM! Studios to deliver a brand new line of superhero comics! The great innovator of our industry brings his inimitable talents back to the direct market in an explosive line of comics that nobody is prepared for! Half-human. Half-alien. All weapon. In this first ongoing series—Soldier Zero—Stan teams up with critically acclaimed writer Paul Cornell (Action Comics, Doctor Who) and artist Javier Pina (Superman, Batman) for a dramatic, action-packed superhero scorcher. When an alien parasite falls to Earth, wheelchair-bound college student Stewart Travers becomes infected and goes through super-human changes that no mortal could imagine. Forced into a galactic war that’s chosen Earth as the battlefield, Stewart defends the front line as . . . Soldier Zero! The intergalactic war hits Earth this October in a new ongoing series from Stan Lee and BOOM! Studios! Featuring covers by fan-favorite artists Trevor Hairsine (X-Men), Dave Johnson (Punisher), and Phil Noto (Avengers: The Origin).

Why it’ll go fast: A lot of nerds have learned their lessons about buying comics with Stan Lee’s name on the cover produced over the last 15 years. For the most part, they’ve been really bad. That said, Boom! Studios has recruited some A-list talent to bring Stan’s latest ideas to life and done a great job promoting the titles. Boom! Editor-in-Cheif Mark Waid has been a trusted name in comics for more than 20-years now and makes sure that his imprint puts out comics of the highest quality. Nerds are going to pick this one up whether they’re fans of Boom!, writer Paul Cornell or Stan the Man. Retailers who remember how the DC’s “Stan Lee’s Just Imagine” series languished on the shelves back in 2002 might not be so hot on this series. I wouldn’t expect to see big piles of issue #1 but watch for a sellout announcement after the reorders come in next week.
