Plazoleta Santa Fe Feria de Libros
The Plazoleta Santa Fe Feria de Libros is an open-air, block-long used book fair that runs year-round, rain or shine, where the bookish bargain hunter can spend hours browsing through an interesting mix of titles. Located just north of Plaza Italia in Palermo, on the wide brick median dividing the opposing sides of Avenida Santa Fe, the “Feria de Libros” is comprised of around 30 vendors, who show up every morning at 10am to open up their crammed stalls to book hunters.
Although most of the books are Spanish-language, a simple inquiry will have the merchants leading visitors through the maze of book shelves to the rare English publication. For Spanish speakers, or those who want to brush up on their Spanish vocabulary, though, the selection, however disorganized, can keep you perusing all afternoon.
This particular used book fair, one of many in greater Buenos Aires, is the place for those who are specifically in search of volumes of history, philosophy, and literature, as well as students who might want to check here first before blowing a few hundred pesos on new textbooks. Children’s titles are also well-represented; consider taking away a few Spanish versions of familiar stories to jump-start the Spanish education of the kiddies at home.
Be on the lookout for special editions at give-away prices by the prince of Argentine literature, Borges, as well as the writings of Freud, Aristotle, Barthe, Jung, and Latin American giant Marquez. This is also the ideal place to discover some lesser-known Latin writers without breaking the bank – ask the vendors for recommendations if you’re feeling in need of some direction.
The Plazoleta Santa Fe used book market runs daily throughout the year. From Friday through Sunday, from about 10a-8p, the empty space next to the book fair fills in with stalls vending everything from beautiful handcrafted wooden toys to finely worked leather goods, silver jewelry, and other typical Argentine souvenirs.
