A good friend rocked my world this week when he sent me a link to something that made my skin crawl. Apparently there have been sightings of what is being referred to as “A creepy gnome” in a small town in South America and now a group of kids have caught the gnome on video. You can see the video here:
Careful, this one’s a real chiller. You gotta love the Internet.

Now lets talk new comics!

This Wednesday was a crusher! My stack of new books is borderline shameful and leads me to ask questions like “what’s wrong with my life that makes me need this many comic books on a weekly basis”. If only I could afford therapy. Until I find accpetance and no longer need to escape the cruel reality of my wasted life I’ll be here picking out a few new comics each week that may be tomorrow’s collectible back issue gems. So let’s get to it!

The Last Defenders, Marvel Comics, Written by Joe Casey, Keith Giffen and drawn by Jim Muniz
Ok, I should admit that I unabashedly love Joe Casey. The guy writes great comics and the Last Defenders looks like another one for Casey’s win column. When you pair the talent of Joe Casey with legendary Keith Giffen, who also makes me giggle on a regular basis, I couldn’t be more excited. Giffen has recently been the major creative power behind Marvel’s Annihilation storyline, which you should be reading, and you can also check out his now legendary run on JLA from the 1980’s being issued in hardcover from DC comics this week.
The Last Defenders may not be one of those comics that sells for hundreds of dollars in the future but don’t be surprised to see it spike in value much like last year’s Omega Flight mini-series from Marvel (at one point Omega Flight #1 was selling for upwards of $20). The key difference between the two being that Omega Flight was terrible and is now worthless whereas Last Defenders looks like it’s going to be great from start to finish.

The Astounding Wolf Man #5, Written By Robert Kirkman and drawn by Jason Howard
I was late to jump on the Astounding Wolf Man band-wagon and found myself having to drive 200 miles to Iowa City to find issues 2-4. Kirkman’s Wolfman is great fun and getting hotter with each issue. Issue #5 of the Astounding Wolf Man comes with an Arthur Adams variant that is going to disappear from shelves in a flash of fur and teeth. With issue #1 of Kirkman’s The Walking Dead (Image Comics ,2003) now selling for upwards of $100.00 it’s a safe bet to say these Wolf Man back issues are not going to be affordable for long. One word of warning, Image seems to have switched their cover paper stock to something lighter weight and easily damaged during shipping. Make sure and check your copy of The Astounding Wolf Man thoroughly before purchasing.

The Lone Ranger and Tonto #1, Dynamite Entertainment, Written by Brett Mathews, John Abrahms, and drawn by Mario Guevara
Dynamite Entertainment is quickly becoming one of my favorite smaller comic companies and the Lone Ranger and Tonto #1 looks like another quality Dynamite book. If you missed the original Lone Ranger series, like I did, now is your chance to see what all the hype was about. Matthew’s has the ability to keep the classic feel of the Lone Ranger character intact without the cheesy dialog of the 70’s TV show while updating the storytelling with a spaghetti-western grit that makes this comic a joy to read. With stunning cover-art by John Cassady and beautiful interior work by Mario Guevara this new Lone Ranger story looks to be an excellent addition to any comic collection.

Man, today’s edition reads like a Tiger Beat fan letter to the New Kids On the Block.

Dear Joe Casey, I love your comics so much they give me goose-bumps.
When I read that you were going to be working with a dreamy hunk like
Keith Giffen I had to call all my nerd friends and scream! I just think you
guys are the awesomeist! Sincerely Matt Baum! XOXO BFF

Someone needs to tell me when I’m gushing like this, it’s embarrassing.
Well before I go here’s a brief list of newer comics that have sold out and have second prints coming:

The Twelve #3, Marvel Comics, written by J. Mike Straczynski, art by Chris Weston.
2nd print coming soon
