Superman Comic Book Smashes Sales Record by more than $1 Million on eBay
This copy of Action Comics #1—graded in 9.0 condition with white pages—set a world record for comic book prices, selling for $3,207,752 on eBay in an auction that ended Sunday evening.
As expected, the final 10 minutes of the eBay auction selling the highest-rated Action Comics #1—the first appearance of Superman—were as exciting as an Internet auction can get, with the price soaring from $2.6 million to the winning bid of $3.2 million, securing its status as the world’s most expensive comic.
Thirteen different bidders entered 48 bids trying to win the comic book, which was graded 9.0 with nearly white pages by comic grading service CGC. Like many eBay auctions, this one came down to the final seconds, where one buyer who hadn’t yet bid on the comic tried to snipe it away from the other 12 buyers with a bid of $3,207,752 with just two seconds left on the clock. That bid, however, was $100 shy of the winning bid, entered 28 seconds before.
The comic—the holy grail of comic book collecting—was one of an estimated 200,000 that was printed in June of 1938 and sold at newsstands for 10 cents. Since then, the vast majority of Action Comics #1 have been lost to time, as there are only about 100 of them left. According to the CGC census, there are only seven copies of Action Comics #1 in 6.0 or better condition.
The seller, Darren Adams of Pristine Comics, wrote in the eBay description of the comic: “If anyone has ever been curious what an ‘Action Comics’ 1 looked like the day it came off of the newsstand 75 years ago, this is the answer.” Adams has said that he will donate one percent of the final sales price—in this case, $32,077.52—to the Christopher and Dana Reeves Foundation.
This new world-record price for a comic book easily outpaced the previous record holder, another 9.0 version with “cream to off-white” pages that was owned by actor Nicholas Cage that sold for $2.16 million in 2011.
