A History of The Sandwich Glass Company
Deming Jarvis started the Boston and Sandwich Glass Factory in 1825. Sandwich was a small town on Cape Cod that was rich in fuel, had easy access to major waterways, and was located only 50 miles from Boston. When Jarvis purchased the land for the factory, he purchased the surrounding 20,000 acres of forest so that the company would not have to pay for wood to burn in the furnaces.

What’s in your basement?
Recently, rummaging through my basement, I put two and two together and came up with twenty-two. OK, I realize that this is improper math, that only an accountant could make happen, but I once toiled in life as an accountant, so I feel justified on the math.
This Week in Geek 6/4
I know I know. I’m late. New comic day was yesterday and I was coming home from a short vacation. I beg your collective forgiveness and promise it won’t happen again, mainly because I’m not paid enough to vacation more than once every five years or so. Plenty of news this week.
1940 B&W 20″ Television
I don’t know about all of you, but I can honestly wonder what my Aunt and Uncle watched on TV back in the 1940’s. I know as a child growing up in the early 1950’s I remember Howdy Doody, Rin Tin Tin, The Lone Ranger, my eldest brother was on the Freddy Friehofer show, and got to make a squiggly line, and that is all I remember. Brings back memories.
Antique/Vintage Watches and Time Pieces
We can tell when shadows on the ground grow longer that time changes, but the easiest way is to look at our watches. And if you’ve got a watch or time piece passed down in your family, you might even discover you’ve got a valuable piece a collector might have interest in.
Model Car and Toy Car Collectibles
As auto companies lay off employees and reduce the models they produce, and the price of gas has us wondering if that van or SUV was worth buying, we might begin to ponder where the auto industry is headed. It seems like fuel efficiency will be the priority in modern car design.
Sterling Tea Balls and Infusers
Tea balls, also known as tea infusers and tea eggs, were most popular around 1890 to 1910. Tea balls are perforated metal ball-shaped containers in which tea leaves are placed. The infuser/tea ball is placed in a cup or pot of hot or boiling water, allowing the tea to brew without loose tea leaves spilling into the pot or cup.
Imitation British Halfpence (Machin’s Mills and Other Coinage of 1786-1789
The most common coin used for small transactions in early America was the copper British halfpenny. These were widely accepted non-legal tender status and were a prime choice for unauthorized reproduction by private individuals. Many counterfeits were made in this country by casting or other crude methods; some were even made in England and imported to this country.
