This is a set of 10 Japanese Makie lacquerware rice and soup bowls. The rice bowl can be placed over the soup bowl as a cover. The soup bowl measures 4-3/4" in diameterand stands 2-1/4" tall while the rice bowl measures 4-5/15" in diameter and stands 1-1/4" tall. Each rice bowl has a beautiful gold and colored hand painted pair of flying cranes. They were purchased in Japan in the 1940's, but the exact age is unknown. The wood grain of the bowls is incredible. MAKIE is made carefully, applying the lacquer over a very long period of time - days and sometimes months. They are in excellent vintage condition and have no cracks, chips or repairs. There is some light wear consistent with gentle infrequent use, and several bowls have some flea bites.
