1538 SALLUST HISTORY Loritus GLAREANUS (SWISS HUMANIST) Rare Historical Philosophical Tract Catiline history Sallust, 86-34 B.C GLAREANUS, H. (Loritus), In Caius Crispi Sallusti Historici clarissimi, quae adhuc extant// historiarum fragmenta, .... Annotationes. Basel, (And. Cratadrum), 1538. 95 pages. COMPLETE Printer's device to last leaf. "Apud And. Cratandrum" is transcribed from colophon Fine woodcut initials. Small 8vo. 6.3 x 4.1 Later boards. Reference: STC 527. FIRST EDITION. Sallust's History of the War Against Jagurtha, and of the Conspiracy of Cataline. Contains notes on Sallust's Bellum Catilinae (p. 7-31) and Bellum Iugurthinum (p. 32-88), and on the spurious "Oratio Sallustii in Ciceronem" and "Oratio Ciceronis in Sallustium" (p. 88-95). Sallust's political thoughts reflect an essentially Roman moralistic outlook, pessimistic towards the decadence and corruption of the Roman nobility. In choosing Catiline and Jugurtha as subjects he was influenced by the dramatic and dangerous nature of their deeds. A good example of this rare work. Some light staining.
