1646 Speed Map of Herefordshire, England

1646 Speed Map - 'fordshire'

John Speed is the premier name in early English mapmaking and although more of a historian than a cartographer, he is known for his superb set of folio county maps first published in 1610/11. His publisher, George Humble, cleverly used Speed's name in publishing a miniature atlas with maps engraved by Pieter Van den Keere. These have now come to be known as 'miniature Speeds' and are greatly valued by collectors of miniature maps.

This map of fordshire comes from the 1646 edition of 'England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland described and abridged from a farr (sic) larger Voloume (sic) done by John Speed'. The map has a title cartouche and scale of distance.

The map measures 5" by 3.5", has later wash hand coloring, and is in very good condition.

The map is guaranteed to be over 360 years old.
