1688 De Fer Map - EspagneNicolas De Fer was the official geographer to the French king as well as being a successful publisher "dans l'Isle du Palais sur le Quay de l'Orloge a la Sphere royale' in Paris. Among his many atlases was his 'Introduction de la Fortification..' first issued in 1693 and showing the defensive sites of major European cities. However he also did a series of world maps for 'Methode pour apprendre geographie' published by Jacques Robbe. The same maps were used in 'El Atlas Abreviado' by Francisco de Aefferden and published in Madrid and Antwerp. This fine map of the Iberian peninsula comes from the 1688 third edition of 'Methode pour apprendre geographie'. The map is clearly engraved and shows the Balearic islands and the Strait of Gibraltar as well as mainland Portugal & Spain. There is a nice cartouche title in the bottom right. The map measures 5.5" by 6", has original outline hand colouring, several folds (as issued), and is in fairly good condition with surface dirt, mainly to the blank margins. The map is guaranteed to be over 300 years old.
