1706 1st Edition. Daniel Defoe. Jure Divino - A Satyr in Twelve Books

Hello, this auction is for a first edition copy of Jure Divino A Satyr. In Twelve Books. By the Author of The True-Born-Englishman published in London in 1706. Though the title page is unsigned, the authorship is made clear by the large and striking frontisportrait of Daniel Defoe. This is the authorized folio edition with usual pagination gap in Book III.

The book is a folio measuring approx. 8.25 x 12.5 inches and is bound in a later half-leather binding with marbled boards and raised bands on spine, all of which are holding well. The lower corners are bumped, with some browning to page extremities, which is most noticeable on the dedication page (see picture). There are also two period signatures not obscuring text (see pictures) and the frontisportrait has been carefully reinforced to one edge.

Jure Divino or Divine Right is a poetic refutation of the divine right of monarchs to govern and covers tyrants throughout the ages, but ends with praise for King Williams rule.

Thank you for looking and please see my other auctions for a copy of Defoe's periodical the Review which advertises the publication of this book.
