The History and Adventures of the renowned Don Quixote, Translated from the Spanish of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra by T. Smollett. To which is prefixed: Some Account of the Author's Life, by T. Smollett MD (1721-1771). Printed for A. Millar, London, 1755.

This is the First Edition of Smollett's superb Translation. T are 2 volumes; 4to.; pp. 403 and 467. The book is complete, all plates are present. Binding: contemporary full speckled calf, raised bands and gilt decorations to spines and boards. Cute bookplate on front endpaper. Small owner's name signed in ink (in contemporanious handwriting) to title pages. Illustrated with 28 sharp copper engraved plates from Francis Hayman's designs, engraved by Charles Grignion (12), Simon François Ravenet (8), Gérard Scotin (6), and Johann Sebastien Müller (2), after a special series of drawings now in the print collection of the British Museum.

Leather binding affected by age, dulling and craqueleeing the spines and the boards. Front hinge of vol. I is loose, other hinges are rather weak. However, the interior, including the endpapers, is in great shape, no foxing, no warping, plates all sharp. A very good set of this famous production. According to baron de Rothschild this is Francis Hayman's best book.
