Latest date stated is 1744, likely 1775. 4 1/8 X 7". [ii], iii-xvi, [1], 2-148 pages. Cover of brown leather with very chipped spine, most of the leather is gone from spine. Board edges and corners are rubbed through. Boards have much rubbing. Binding is good, both hinges cracked through and held together only by the original strings. Both fixed end papers have writing, front fixed also has a small bookplate. Free end papers are gone from this volume. Text pages are toned and about half have a stain to the top edges. Contains words of various syllables, Letters, Grammar, Prose and Verse, Proper forms of prayer, and 12 illustrated fables with an engraving for each. The Reverend Mr. Thomas Dilworth (died 1780) was an English cleric and author of a widely-used schoolbook, both in Great Britain and America , A New Guide to the English Tongue. Noah Webster as a boy studied Dilworth's book, and was inspired partly by it to create his own spelling
