Herculaneum, the ITALIAN city counted 5000 inhabitants. It was a residential city, with the richest villas facing the sea. At the time of eruption of Vesuvius, August 24 79 AD, it was buried under a thick layer of lava. It was found in 1711. Excavations began at Herculaneum in 1747 and reproductions of the paintings became very popular as models in the decoration of 18th century drawing rooms.
