AN INQUIRY INTO THE NATUREAND CAUSES OF THE WEALTH OF NATIONS. By Adam Smith, LL.D. The Third Edition, with Additions, in Three Volumes. Vol. I. London : W, Strahan and T. Cadell, 1784. The year 1776 deserves note not only for the start of the American Revolution but also for the appearance of Adam Smithâe(tm)s classic treatise on economics, The Wealth of Nations . More than ten years in the writing, the book was an immediate surprise success, sold out within six months, and went through five editions before Smith died in 1790. The book for sale is Volume I of the third edition of The Wealth of Nations , which expanded from two to three volumes because Smith added new material under the heading âeoeAdditions and Correctionsâe. The text of Volume I, which contains Book I and Book II of the entire work, remains essentially unchanged from the first edition, and contains the gems of insight and expression that made Smith famous. Smith continues to be most famous for insisting that each individual possesses the right to proceed unimpeded in his exercise of economic activity.
