Antique LARGE handmade & hand forged wrought iron chopping blade retaining it's original old natural rusted surface. Maine , 1800, possibly earlier. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 4 1/2 lbs. 31" long by 5 1/2" tall by 3/8" thick at the handle. LARGE handmade & hand forged wrought iron chopping blade retaining it's original old natural rusted surface. We purchased this in an estate in Yarmouth , Maine last week. This was a family keepsake. It had been passed down through the family. According to the very matronly spinster guardian of the family legacy, and from her lips, this chopping blade was used by a family member "in his tavern" "near " (the Yarmouth , Maine area) that was "a stagecoach stop". It was "used to chop the food they served the stagecoach". Dissected, a family member ran a local tavern. What tavern, w, what stagecoach going to and from w is unknown. The Yarmouth area had plenty of taverns and plenty traveling stagecoaches. Adding legend is the spinster's appended "Nathanial Hawthorne stayed t" legacy. It must be noted, in fairness, that the location IS right for Hawthorne for when he traveled from his uncle's home in Baldwin to college at Bowdoin ( Brunswick ). Through all this we offer an old, authentic and VERY LARGE chopping blade that very well may have been used
