Here we have an Antique 1800's, SNELL T- Handle Hand Auger Barn Beam, 1 in. Bit, with Adjustable Handle. The Snell Manufacturing Company , Fiskdale, a village in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, has a long history. In 1841 Melville Snell came from Pawtucket, Rhode Island to Sturbridge where he manufactured augers and bits for 2 years. Melville's nephew, Otis, moved from Ware and with his uncle and Mr. Judson Smith, formed a partnership, Smith, Snell & Co. In 1850 Lucius Snell, younger brother of Otis, purchased Mr. Smith's interest. Melville Snell and his nephews, Otis and Lucius, reorganized as Snell & Brothers and continued as such until 1861. SNELL MFG. CO. 4 is stamped on the shaft just above the flutes.These large augers were typically used in timber framing, barn beam, type construction. This is a 'higher end auger setup' in that you get a removable handle which has an adjustable feature to allow other size auger shafts to be switched in and out !! The round/square shaft is 7/16". The Bit end is 1" with a starter screw and cutting spurs. The shaft section below the handle is 15" Long. The auger flutes are clean with no rust. The heavy duty adjustable handle is in very good condition with no cracks and it has nice metal end caps. The handle is 13" long. No owner's marks.
