Original full leather, gilt red leather spine label. 7 1/8 by 4 1/2 inches. 312 pages. Leather hinge of front cover split but cover still well attached. Minor wear to covers. Owner's name on front free endpaper and inked out on title page. Most pages have some foxing, spotting or browning. Complete with endpapers and all 23 engraved plates. Nice copy. Scarce. Please see the photographs, which can be enlarged and are part of the description. The first English edition was published in 1819. As well as this 1820 Philadelphia printing, the book was also published in New York in the same year, so this could be the first American edition of what turned out to be a very popular work. It was republished many times, usually without Jane Marcet's name and often with the name of someone who added material and supposedly improved it.
