1846 SYRACUSE NY LETTER MENTIONS GERRIT SMITH

1pg letter, approx. 8" x 12-1/2", dated at Syracuse, N.Y., Oct. 9, 1846, from Noxon, Leavenworth & Comstock, to the Hon. Azariah C. Flagg, Comptroller of the State of N.Y., at Albany.

Folded letter has red "SYRACUSE/N.Y." cds & red "5" rate handstamp.

An interesting letter, in which an inquiry is made as to certain lands sold in Camillus, N.Y. in 1830, and mentioning Gerrit Smith, (1797-1874), a noted Abolitionist, who financed John Brown in his Kansas & Harpers Ferry activities.

Includes:

"Four acres in the North East Corner of lot 35 in the Town of Camillus have been sold for Taxes - Three acres were sold in 1830 & bid off by Harvey Baldwin, and deeded to Gerrit Smith, Feb. 1, 1840. One acre was sold in 1834 & bid off by Peter Smith [Gerrit Smith's very wealthy father], & land conveyed to Gerrit Smith, Feb. 17, 1840. Will you please inform us whether the proof of notice required by statute to be given to the tenant in possession was ever filed in your office by the purchasers or the persons to whom the land has been conveyed?..."

Very Fine.
