VERY rare, original, 1860's CDV Photograph of Union Civil War Brigadier General William Woods Averell by J.D. Vickery. Photographic Artist-- Bath , NY . I have seen his same spelled as Averell as well as Averill. On his grave stone it is spelled Averell. In script someone has written on the back of the card General Averill.This fantastic, period, albumen Photograph measures overall approx. 4" by 2 3/8" and is mounted on its original, square corner, gold rule border CDV Card Mount. On the reverse is the mark of the photographer - J.D Vickery-Photographic Artist, Bath , N.Y. - Duplicates can be held at any time.This is a wonderful bust portrait of General W.W. Averell wearing the uniform of a Union Army General. There is one fault with this wonderful CDV---there is a small tear in the upper right had corner of the photograph itself. Born in Cameron, Steuben County , New York , he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point , New York in 1855, placing 26th in his class. He became a 2nd Lieutenant, was assigned to the United States Army Mounted Rifles, and served in the Indian Wars on the Western frontier. He was severely wounded in a fight with Navajo in 1859.
