Up for bid is a nice cover in good condition but with a fault--it was roughly opened on the right and the stamp was damaged--shame on you, Col. Rusling! It is addressed to Col. James F. Rusling, Care of Quartermaster, Mobile. AL. Col. Rusling started with the NJ Volunteers and quickly moved up the ranks. He served as an officer in the Civil War and after the war was promoted to Colonel and then to Brigadier General. He was the Inspector who visited the Vicksburg area after the war to help create the National Cemetery there for the internment of war dead from Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas. (Check the internet for Vicksburg National Cemetery for the story.) James Rushing became one of the most notable civil war authors of his time with the publication of "Men and Things I Saw in Civil War Days" which was very favorably reviewed by the New York Times when it appeared. This letter is addressed to Col. Rushing when he was an Inspector with the Quartermasters and stationed with occupation forces at Mobile, AL. The cover is postmarked at NY and has a fancy cancel as well as an ad corner for The United States Service Magazine which was a new journal with a focus on military matters. Apparently Col.
