1879 S Morgan Silver Dollar � � D � E � S � C � R � I � P � T � I � O � N The Morgan dollar was a US dollar coin minted from 1878 to 1904, and then again in the year 1921. It was the first standard silver dollar minted since production of the previous design ceased due to the passage of the Coinage Act of 1873 ending the free coining of silver. The coin is named for its designer, US Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan. The 1921 Morgan dollars are less rare because the earlier ones were melted down when the Pittman Act of 1918 was passed authorizing the melting and recoining of millions of silver dollars.
