An extremely good content autograph letter signed, "And. D. White", Cairo, Feb. 23, 1889, 14pp., 5" x 8". Personal letter to friend, Mrs. A. C. L. Botta [poet, writer Anne Charlotte Lynch Botta (1811-1891)]. Andrew Dickson White (1832-1919) - Cornell University co-founder and first president, 1866-1885. Among his many diplomatic roles, he served as Minister to Russia, 1893-94; and Ambassador to Germany, 1897-1902. Friend of industrialist Andrew Carnegie, among other notables.[Written while on a journey with (Willard) Fiske.]In rich detail, White describes the sights and sounds of Egypt -- his passion for the architecture, encroachment of Western Civilization with signs reading, "Grog Shop", etc., swarms of tourist and missionaries trying to convert the Mohammadans. His mood changes in the latter portion of the letter. He's deeply upset by a recent Cornell lawsuit. Apparently, a multi-million dollar endowment was withdrawn. He rants for a few pages and blames Fiske for some of the bungling. Letter excerpts:"And the new Egypt is hardly less surprising than the old, - & teaches one at every turn, that every civilization is reason for existence.
