VINTAGE ANTIQUE ORIENTAL ESTATE ASIAN CHINESE "CHINA" STAMPED MUD MAN FIGURINE CLAY GLAZED
DESCRIPTION:
The piece measures 4.5" in height; it is a one finger sculpture (see base photo) . "China" is stamped horizontally on the base of the figurine - where the artisan placed his finger. This figurine is being sold as -is. It has a chip on the top of the head. (See photos) . Still very old and unique face ...for the price (1890-1919)
According to "How to Collect Antique Chinese M udman Figurines..."Inspect the glaze. Antique Chinese mudman figurines have brightly colored, lead-based glazes called majolica. The most common colors are black, yellow, brown, green and blue. The low -firing techni que often produced crackle in the glaze. Newer kinds of mudmen have matte glazes that are very different. Even if they have a crackle in the glaze, the muted colors will tip you off that the figures are not antiques... Look for a stamp on the underside of the figure that is impressed into the clay. the oldest mudmen, made prior to 1890, will not have a stamp, but you will be able to see evidence of the artisan's work.
