Handwritten diary (see scans below) of a young woman, 144 pages, with entries that span from November, 1890 to February, 1893. Entries include details of life at her school, her struggle to be a good Christian, her indecision between two suitors, her difficulties as a teacher intern, her worries about ailing parents, holiday visits, church attendance, and much more. T are some poems copied out throughout but it's unclear whether these are hers or poems by others she admires. Locations include Waterford and other towns and locations around Connecticut.
She is a good and thorough writer, though given over to purple prose now and again. After a quote from scripture (she quotes scripture at the beginning of nearly every entry), her diary begins: "Today is the seventeenth anniversary of my birthday. It is the second time I have spent that day away from home. Though I cannot be t, still home is in my thoughts and I can at most see my dear mamma and pappa drawing up to the hearth and I almost know that they are talking about me. O, what a comfort to know that they are well and that someday I may hope to see them."
The diarist was baptized shortly before her 17th birthday and of that experience she writes: "On Sunday, Sept. 28th, 1890 I was baptized
