~ Victorian Mauchline Ware Needle Case & Darning Egg ~ German wooden needle case called "The Columbian Egg", from the Columbian Exhibition at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Embellished with a transferred engraving of a Victorian woman admiring her darming egg. An exhibit at the fair, called "The Egg of Columbus," was popular at the time. Note the charming use of the Patent number "1492" on the interior of the egg, the year that Columbus discovered America. The egg design works in such a fashion that the top comes off as the bottom is pushed upwards, revealing the internal case. The needle size is selected via a dial mechanism. Circa: 1890s Condition: GOOD There are no cracks or splits. Wear appropriate to age with some nicks. Varnish on inside needle case lid has dried and has chipped away.
