Published in New York by Harper & Brothers in 1895. description continues below the picture- - - - DISCUSSION: An early biography of one of the 18th century's great industrialists by one of the 19th century's great reformers. Scottish author Samuel Smiles (1812–1904), was an editor and author of popular social criticism and biographies. Early in his career he was a tireless promoter of such radical causes as women's suffrage and reforms to make Parliament more democratic. By the 1850s he had switched his focus to the laboring man (and woman), their problems, and solutions to those problems. His 1859 self-published book "Self-Help; with Illustrations of Character and Conduct" became a best-seller which propelled him to national literary stardom. In his 1875 his book "Thrift" he declares- "riches do not constitute any claim to distinction. It is only the vulgar who admire riches as riches".
