18th Century Redware POTTERY Pot w/ Handles FOLK ART

Up for auction is a very interesting 18th century redware pot or jug with handles. This piece appears to have some very primitive glaze decoration which includes the date 1796 or 1776... it is hard to make out the second to last number. This pot came from a very old estate in my area and I was told that a family member dug this piece up from the backyard of the home many years ago. This seemed to be a likely story given the long history of the area w is came from (the Tompkinsville Stapleton section of Staten Island, NY) We believe this is an early American piece but it is also possible that it was brought over from England being as t were some British settlements in our area at one point. We really know nothing else about this piece except that it appears to be very, very old. The surface has many years or soil on it in some areas as you can see in the photos. T is also a minor chip missing from the top rim but this appears to have happened a really long time ago. We have not and will not try to clean this piece... it is just as we purchased it. This is a nice substantial pot measuring 13" tall and about 8.5" at it's widest point. Please see all of the photos for a good visual description. If you are in our area you are welcome to come inspect this unique piece in person... just email us. This is a wonderful piece of American folk ... read more
