Early 1900s pin / ribbon / medallion that was given away in 1908 for an essay contest at LaFayette High School, Buffalo, New York won by G. Raynolds Stern, Jr. - the pin at the top measures 1.25 inches and is embossed NEW YORK; the blue & yellow ribbon is attached to a very heavy embossed medal that measures 1.5 inches round; embossing on the medal reads: SONS OF THE REVOLUTION embossed on the lower edge; on the upper edge 12 small stars are embossed; in the center, an embossed picture of a Colonial soldier holding a rifle / bayonet in one arm and a flag pole in the other - on an embossed ribbon is " 1776 - 1885 "; also, on another embossed thin ribbon is a latin motto; on the reverse side, there is an embossed wreath around the edge and inside the wreath is engraved: FIRST PRIZE ESSAY / 1908 / G. RAYNOLDS STERN, JR. / LA FAYETTE HIGH SCHOOL / BUFFALO, N.Y.; a very nice well struck medal in about perfect condition - ribbon has slight wear - has some discoloration on the lower edge which could probably be removed.
