Up for auction is a wonderful 1909 original 8 x 10 hand tinted photograph of the Great Lakes steamer James Gayley, steaming past Saulte Ste. Marie, Michigan. The photo is matted on a heavy brown cardboard mat often used on photos from that era. The mat is embossed Young, Lord & Rhoades, Ltd SOO, MICH. on the lower left corner The photo clearly shows crew members hard at work and, quite possibly, the Captain or First Mate standing on the bridge deck. Wow--this is a GREAT photo!! According to my research, the steamer James Gayley was built in 1902 by Globe Iron Works, Cleveland, as hull #410. The photo itself is in quite good condition, with the exception of a crease just left of center, and some "dents" which are just right of the crease. These flawed areas show much more when the photo is held flat or at an angle. When stood upright, as it would appear is framed and hung
