This sewing machine is a pretty thing. Yes, it shows wear - some of the gold filigree on the sewing bed is almost completely gone and the lacquer finish has yellowed and crackled in spots - but it's the kind of wear you see on old things that were loved and cared for and used. The chromed parts gleam and it still sews a nice tight stitch, just as it has for the last 97 years.The serial number is G6376541, dating its production to August 14, 1918. Model 28 is a three-quarter-size version of Singer's legendary Model 27 and it was built just as well. We have included lots of photographs so you can see exactly what you're getting.Model 28s use a bullet-shaped shuttle (see photo nine) that moves back and forth in an arc below the needle. The shuttle carries a small bobbin that looks sort of like a miniature dumbbell. Singer collectors refer to it as a "long" bobbin. The shuttle works in just the same way as the shuttle of a loom, weaving its thread horizontally as the needle weaves its thread vertically. This simple technology worked so well that Singer manufactured this family of sewing machines (Models VS1, VS2, VS3, 27, 28, 127 and 128) from the 1880s until the 1960s.Don't be deceived by the simplicity of the running gear (photo ten) because this is a very rugged and well-made machine.
