1920s-30s CHINLE REVIVAL SERAPE Navajo Rug 83x53 WoW!

Offered is a circa 1920s-30s exquisite old Navaho weaving that measures 6 feet 11 inches long by 4 foot 5 inches wide. It is attributed to the Chinle area and is in excellent condition. It was woven by an advanced expert weaver on a primitive upright loom of all Native hand shorn, hand carded and beautifully handspun old Churro and high quality Merino sheep wool, both warp & weft. The design of this medium blanket weight weaving is in an old classic 3 panel serape layout. Each panel is comprised of 3 big, bold stepped hourglass motifs with small white and blue sacred spruce tree motifs at each end of every hourglass motif. Separating each panel is a narrow band of white and blue tiny diamonds and geometric motifs. The entire piece is done on a beautiful red ground. This weaving exhibits the bold graphic motif so prevalent in the first quarter of the 20 th century. A Navajo Indian who is also the assistant trader at a historic Trading Post still operating, recently saw this piece and seemed mesmerized by it... he commented the design has a Romanesque quality to it...he saw columns in the motifs...and he really liked this weaving.

We obtained this vintage Native American textile in Santa Fe , New Mexico just to offer to you on eBay. It has a very smooth, even weft count averaging 24 per inch and a warp count of 8 per inch.
