1920's Babe Ruth, Jack Johnson, Arthur Conan Doyle Signed Baseball. We had toyed with the prospect of entitling this lot, "The Strangest Multi-Signed Baseball on Earth," but figured that we'd stick with more common search terms instead. But the supplemental title certainly does apply, and we use the adjective "strangest" in the most positive possible light. The ball begins in very typical fashion, with a 5/10 black ink sweet spot signature from Babe Ruth, though it quickly takes a turn for the bizarre as we find that the Babe is sharing space with the first black Heavyweight Champion of the World, Jack Johnson (4/10). But wait, it gets even stranger, as we find the pairing of Arthur Conan Doyle (author of the Sherlock Holmes books) and Clarence Darrow (famous legal mind best remembered for his defense of the theory of evolution in the famous Scopes vs. State of Tennessee trial of 1925). These signatures rate 3/10 and 8/10 respectively. Jack Dempsey appears on a side panel at a barely visible 1/10 along with another name we have yet to discern. The final panel presents Bob Meusel (7/10) and Ted Williams (8/10), the Red Sox Hall of Famer obviously signing decades later.
