1934-36 National Chicle Batter Up R-318 Carey SGC 60

âe(tm)s baseball card #89 from the unique die-cut âe~34 - âe~36 National Chicle Batter-Up R318 set, Tom Carey of the St. Louis Browns.

It is graded 60 by Sportscard Guaranty Ltd. of Parsippany, NJ, and appropriately labeled and encased in clear lucite.

It is rare: In its history, SGC has only authenticated 1 other card of this type with a higher grade.

Thomas Francis Aloysius Carey, known to his pals as Scoops, was quite a jokester. He played 8 seasons at the Show from 1935 - 1946 for the Brownies and Boston Red Sox. Tom started the âe~46 World Series season with the BoSox, but alas was released in July. In the midst of all that, he was a starter for the Hollywood Stars of the old Pacific Coast League in 1938.

The National Chicle Company of Boston issued this innovatively interactive 192-card set -- one of the first to use die-cuts so the players could stand up. Thus, a lot of the cards got thrashed and trashed, making high-grade cards a bit of a rarity.
